Time-Travelling Nazi Killer
Seven people at a technology company were shot dead by a co-worker who believed he had earned a soul from God by travelling back in time to kill Hitler and the last six Nazis.
Wakefield
Wakefield, Massachusetts, is a scenic town, 10 miles north of Boston, that has preserved much of its historic New England appearance. It is home to Lake Quannapowitt, a place where events and recreational activities are held throughout the year.
First settled in 1638, Wakefield has had a long history, and is known as a relatively safe and peaceful place to live. On Boxing Day 2000, that peace was shattered when 42-year-old Michael McDermott walked into his workplace and shot dead seven of his co-workers.
Michael had with him an AK-47 machine gun, 12-gauge shotgun, and a pistol, along with multiple rounds of ammunition. He used 37 bullets to shoot his victims in the back of the head multiple times.
The crime itself was horrific enough, but the reasons behind the killings were as bizarre as they were stupefying. Michael believed he was born without a soul, and upon praying to God, he was told he would earn a soul by travelling back in time to kill Hitler and the last six Nazis.
Preferring to be alone
Despite his outlandish claims of time travel and killing Hitler on a mission from God, Michael had a relatively good upbringing and nothing suggested future spree killer. Born in Marshfield, Massachusetts, he grew up with three siblings, whose parents were teachers and historians.
Michael was often seen with his parents helping them in various community groups around the town and went on to become a popular kid in school. When he was 18, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and remained there for six years before being honourably discharged for reasons unknown.
Yet, things still were not looking too bad for Michael, he was employed at the local nuclear power station for another six years then moved on to work for the technology side of the Duracell battery company. When Duracell moved its offices in February 2000, Michael joined Edgewater Technology.
From his time starting at Edgewater to Boxing Day of the same year, Michael snapped and decided to rampage through the offices with multiple weapons. In October 2000, he moved out of his apartment and moved into lodgings near the offices.
He had left his apartment in a complete mess and owing the landlord almost $2,000 (USD) in rent. The dishwasher was broken and had been leaking onto the floor daily, there were holes in the walls, ripped carpets, and cracked windows.
The new landlord later said that Michael liked to collect antique guns but that he very much kept to himself and preferred to be alone. This was less than two months before the Boxing Day massacre.
Edgewater
That fateful day in 2000 was like any other for the 80 employees in the office building, apart from the Christmas spirit still running strong through their thoughts and actions. Though, some were aggrieved at having to work Boxing Day in the first place.
